Automated Analysis of Constructed Response (AACR) Principal Investigator Paula Lemons from the University of Georgia is giving an invited talk, Designing Research-Based Learning Environments for Students and Faculty, on February 4, 2015 for the Science and Technology Education Group in the Department of Education and Professional Studies at King’s College, London, UK.Dr. Lemons is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Georgia. Designing Research-Based Learning Environments for Students and FacultyAbstractDr. Lemons' long-term research agenda is to investigate the impact on learning of formal environments in the university, including the classroom for students and teaching professional development programs for faculty. For example, what cognitive steps do students take as they solve biology problems? What is the impact of teaching professional development on faculty ideas about teaching and learning? In this presentation, Dr. Lemons shares findings from the first year of a five-year study of faculty who volunteered for a teaching professional development program associated with the Automated Analysis of Constructed Response project (http://create4stem.msu.edu/project/aacr). In this professional development program, faculty engage in learning communities to develop new ways of assessing student conceptual understanding in biology. After her presentation, Dr. Lemons will ask participants to offer feedback on future directions for the work.
